COMMON SENSE
Goes a long way

A great  Disc Jockey is willing to listen to suggestions, never having an attitude about it. A professional Disc Jockey will also accept the fact that being in a different club or area, the locals may know the crowd pleasers, the songs that work. A professional Disc Jockey cannot know everything about  musical preferences and entertainment needs without great communication between the audience and themselves.

DJ INSURANCE:
Don't leave home without it

Estimated cost $250 - $400

Many DJ's I know gamble with $1000's of dollars worth of
their equipment everytime they head to a gig. I hope they have good credit. One of these days they may need it. Let's face it, for the cost of one nights pay, you can have peace of mind knowing that you won't have to take out a second mortgage to replace all your gear and music. What about personal Injury Insurance? If your speaker stack falls are you covered for personal Injury law suits?  If you know of a great Insurance Company that deals with DJ Equipment. Let us know...we will post it here.

It started for me some 30 years ago. I was a drummer in a band and also running my own entertainment agency. A local DJ I had booked for a gig, decided that he wanted more money for the job. The club decided that he was not worth it and fired him on the spot. This was at a time when there wasn't a new DJ business popping up on every street corner. The club needed a new DJ and I had none to offer. This was not the answer that the club wanted. "Then you come and do it" was their next line. At the time I had a huge collection of LP's and 45's and I had one turntable and a huge PA System. My thought was "why not" I could DJ at a club. I had never gave a second thought about being a DJ before that day. As they say, the rest is history. I bought a second cheap turntable and I called myself a DJ. Lot's of hard lessons later I now have over 4000 gigs behind me. A lot of things have changed. many things have not.  It's a lot harder to find gigs now for a lot of DJ's, as I said earlier everyone and their brother is a DJ now or so it seems. I'll be covering a few of changes in a series of articles. Stay tuned.  I might even come up with  a new Idea or two that you had not yet thought of. (to be continued)
